Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works. Copyright protection reserves certain exclusive rights to the author of a work, including rights of reproduction and public performance.

Teachers may, under very specific situations, use copyrighted material for instruction.  Click Here to view or print the Copyright Primer to understand how copyright permissions and restrictions impact the classroom under the Fair Use provisions.
