From the Desk of the Principal...
It is an exciting time of the year! Yes, our thoughts are on the holidays and the anticipation of days away from school and celebration times with families and friends. However, our thoughts and actions are still on teaching and learning each school day! We are mid-way through the second nine-week grading period and PROGRESS REPORTS GO HOME ON DECEMBER 5TH! Parents, if your child does not bring home a progress report, please contact your child's teacher or the school's administration. It is very important that you remain aware of your child's current school progress and grades. Students will receive their next Report Cards on January 23, 2015.
Congratulations to Coach Robert Grant who is the recipient of the WCPS Middle School Football Coach award for this past season! We are proud of Coach Grant and his dedication to our students, our school and our community. We always knew he was the best and now WCPS knows that, too! We also congratulate our October Teachers of the Month! We have such awesome teachers and there was a tie for October Teacher of the Month. Our recognition goes to Ms. Antonia Evans who teaches our 5th-8th Grade Life Skills students and to Ms. Stephanie Edwards who teaches 8th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies.
Our school would like to welcome Faith Presbyterian Church who is a new WCPS business partner with our school! This Partner-in-Education member has been supporting our school with monetary donations that have been used to purchase supplies for students. We are so appreciative and we welcome them to our Dillard Team and look forward to a long partnership with them.
If you missed our school's first Parent Teacher Organization meeting in the Community, then you missed a wonderful event. On Tuesday, November 18th, our school's PTO meeting was held at the Community Crisis Center on South Slocumb Street. The school's band and the school's chorus members provided entertainment and a meal was served to all in attendance. There was a "packed house"! Thank you to Ms. Victoria Ruffin and the Dillard Middle School choral students and thank you to Ms. Shannon Stokes and the Dillard Middle School band students. Also, we would like to recognize Ms. Linda Jones, our school's Parent Involvement Coordinator and the PTO Executive Board for making this goal a success for our school. A big thank you to Ms. Adeen George and the Community Crisis Center for helping our school to have a successful PTO in the Community event.
During the month of November our students and staff supported the Salvation Army by collecting food items for their pantry. The barrel was overflowing and a big thank you goes to our staff and students who made this possible and to Ms. Millicent Brooks, our Guidance Counselor, who spearheaded this effort. Also, during the month of November our school's Student Government Association under the leadership of Ms. Naomi Williams, 8th Grade Exceptional Childrens' Teacher, continued their annual Thanksgiving boxes donation and four families were recipients of "stuffed" boxes to support their Thanksgiving holiday. Thank you to the students and their families who made this a success.
We welcome parental input! We need you to be a part of your child's educational success. The school's administration and staff is focused on becoming an "academically driven" school environment and parental knowledge and support is a very important part of this process. Contact your child's teacher and ask questions about homework, classwork and grade-level expectations. Together we will be able to see the academic growth that is needed for all students at our school.
As always, contact the school's administration if you have concerns, questions, or comments. We spend a lot of time with your child each day and we understand that we must work together in order for your child to be as successful as possible!
