Teaching Fellows

  • Members of the General Assembly will meet with supporters of the Teaching Fellows program on May 16 to discuss reinstituting the scholarship.  The state director, Kerry Mebane, has asked that high school counselors forward the names of any interested seniors to her BEFORE they meet.
  • If you are a senior who is interested in majoring in education at one of the following colleges in NC, please see Mrs. Coates immediately:  ECU, Elon, Lenoir-Rhyne, Meredith, NC A&T, NC Central, NC State, Queens, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Pembroke, UNC-Wilmington, or Western Carolina.
  • Academic Requirements are as follows:  minimum 2.5 GPA, minimum 900 on the SAT (CR + M).
  • If the General Assembly decides to reinstate the scholarship, interested students will be contacted this summer to complete an application.

 

Elizabeth City State University

  • Seniors who are planning to attend Elizabeth City State University should see Mrs. Coates to pick up a scholarship application; deadline:  May 10.

 

Sing2Win College Scholarship

  • Gospel singers, praise dancers, and gospel instrumentalists are invited to enter a talent competition at the Paramount Theatre in Goldsboro.
  • Students must be seniors; event will take place on June 3; winners could earn up to $2,000 in scholarships.

NCCU Scholarship

  • Local scholarship sponsored by the Gold/Wayne chapter of the NCCU Alumni Association.
  • Applicants must be interested in attending North Carolina Central University.
  • See Mrs. Coates for an application; deadline:  May 4.

 

Alton Bridgers Memorial Scholarship

  • $1,000 renewable scholarship sponsored by Hewett & Wood, P.A.
  • Competition will be based on academic excellence, character, and financial need.
  • Applicants must also write a one page essay on what iconic figure he or she would most like to pattern his or her life after…and how this scholarship would him or her reach that goal.

Top Ten Scholarship @ Wayne Community College

  • Covers full or part-time tuition and required fees
  • Applicants must be interested in one of the following ten programs:  Automotive Systems Technology, Criminal Justice Technology/Latent Evidence, Emergency Preparedness Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Networking Technology, Office Administration, Pharmacy Technology, Sustainable Agriculture, Turfgrass Management Technology, or Welding Technology

ECU/Walter & Marie Williams Leadership Awards Program

  • One year program for incoming freshmen from eastern NC to participate in a year-long leadership training program and complete a community service project.
  • Recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship
  • Applicants must have an unweighted 3.0 GPA, score at least a 1000 on the math and critical reading sections of the SAT (or 21 on the ACT), and be involved in leadership, service, or student organizations in school or the community.

180 Medical Scholarships

  • $1,000 scholarships sponsored by 180 Medical to help students with spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, and transverse myelitis attend college. (2-year or 4-year institutions).
  • See Mrs. Coates for an application; deadline:  June 1st.

 

 

AES Engineering Scholarship

  • $500 scholarship
  • Applicants are not required to be majoring in engineering in order to apply for this scholarship.
  • There is no application packet; students must write an essay of no more than 1000 words in response to the following prompt:  What are your dreams for your future?  When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful?
  • Be sure to include your full name as well as the name of your high school and your plans for next year. Submit your essay to:  scholarships@aesenginners.com; deadline:  October 5, 2012

 

Woodrow & Eunice Colclough Scholarship

  • Provides financial assistance to a Wayne County student who is majoring in one of the agricultural sciences or who has an interest in pre-veterinary medicine at NC State University.
  • Although preference is given to students at Rosewood High School, the competition is open to all seniors in Wayne County, in the event no student at RWH fits the college major/career interest criterion.
  • The application is available online at www.cals.ncsu.edu/scholarships; deadline:  May 1st.

 

Walmart Dependent Scholarship

  • $13,000 scholarship payable over 4 years at $1,625 per semester
  • Applicants must be the dependent of a Walmart employee who has been actively employed with any division of Walmart for at least 6 consecutive months (as of March 15, 2012).
  • Applicant must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.0 and planning to enroll as a full time freshman at a 2-year or 4-year college or university in the fall of 2012.
  • Selection is based on academics and financial need; winner notifications will be emailed in early May 2012.
  • To apply, go to https://www.act.org/walmart/depend and follow the onscreen instructions to register and create an account; supporting documents (i.e., transcript, tax returns, FAFSA Student Air Report) must be mailed separately from the online application process.

Abbott & Fenner Scholarship

  • $1,000 scholarship sponsored by Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants.
  • Available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as students currently registered in college.
  • To apply, students must write an essay (between 500-1000 words) on the following topic:  What was the most difficult time in your life, and why?  How did your perspective on life change as a result of this difficulty?
  • Essays should be sent by email to scholarships@abbottandfenner.com; deadline: June 15.

 

UNC-Wilmington

  • The Honors College at UNC-W also provides scholarships; students need to submit an application to the Honors College to be considered for these.
  • The Alumni Association also sponsors scholarships.  Online applications are available.
  • There are also need-based scholarship programs which require students to submit the FAFSA (financial aid application).  Students do not have to apply by November 1st in order to be considered for these.

Big Sun Scholarship

  • $500 scholarship for a student athlete
  • Applicants must write a short essay in response to the questions:  How has your education contributed to who you are today?  Why do you want to earn a college education?

Mount Olive College

  • Merit-based scholarships ranging from $3,000 per year to $6,000 per year are available for students who have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and a minimum SAT score of 920 or min. ACT score of 19.
  • Departmental Scholarships are also available in areas such as art, agribusiness, music, education, and science/math.
  • Students who are members of an Original Free Will Baptist Church are also eligible to receive a scholarship.

Barton College Scholarships

  • Barton College in Wilson, NC has numerous scholarships ranging from $3,000 per year to $10,000 per year.
  • Students are considered for these scholarships when they submit their applications to Barton; GPA, class rank, and SAT/ACT scores determine the value of each scholarship.

Pfeiffer University

  • Pfieffer University offers a variety of academic, athletic, program-specific (teaching, communications, science), service, and church-related (United Methodist) scholarships. 
  • In order to be considered, students should submit a completed application including high school transcript and SAT and/or ACT scores. 
  • Accepted students are invited to campus to compete for scholarships ranging from $1,000 to full tuition.

UNC-Greensboro

  • UNCG Scholars Program

Ø      UNC-Greensboro offers scholarships ranging from $2500 to full tuition, fees, room, and board.

Ø      Successful candidates generally present a minimum SAT score of 1200 (CR + M) or an ACT composite score of 27, and a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Ø      Students who meet the minimum criteria based on their admissions application will be invited to apply for the scholarship after they have been admitted to UNC-G.

SunTrust Off To College Scholarship Sweepstates

  • Free to enter; eligibility not based on GPA or financial need
  • Fifteen chances to win a $1,000 scholarship with one winner chosen every two weeks from October to May.  Students can re-register after each drawing for the next scheduled drawing.

Air Force ROTC Scholarship

  • The Air Force ROTC Scholarship Program provides 3-and 4-year scholarships in three different types to high school seniors who are interested in joining the military after graduating from college.
  • The scholarship covers college tuition, books, most fees, and a nontaxable monthly stipend ranging from $300 to $500 per month.

Naval ROTC Scholarship

  • Covers full tuition, books, and fees worth up to $180,000
  • Applicants should be in the top 10% of their class OR have qualifying SAT scores of 520 (Math) and 530 (Verbal).
  • Scholarship applicants are NOT required to participate in any JROTC program in high school to apply for or earn the scholarship.

  • MeritAid.com is a comprehensive web site dedicated to helping students with the college search by matching them to merit-based scholarships that reflect their accomplishments and interests.

 

Army ROTC Scholarships

  • Full-tuition, merit-based scholarship for students interested in joining the army as a second lieutenant officer upon graduating from college
  • Provides hands-on leadership development in addition to regular college coursework
  • Over 1100 colleges and universities in the USA have Army ROTC programs.

Education Training Vouchers

  • Available  to youth who were adopted after the age of 16 or who were in foster care after their 17th birthday
  • Valued up to $5,000 per year toward the cost of attendance at most colleges, community colleges, or vocational schools
  • Students apply directly online at www.statevoucher.org.

 

NC Child Welfare Postsecondary Education Support Scholarships

  • Scholarships for young adults ages 18 through 25 who either aged out of NC foster care or were adopted from NC foster care on or after their 12th birthday
  • Students apply online at www.NCReach.org.

 

NC Veterans Affairs Scholarship

  • Four-year scholarship program for students of disabled, deceased, combat or POW/MIA war veterans.
  • Requirements:  veteran parent was a legal resident of NC at the time of said veteran’s entrance into that period of service in the military OR be born and raised in NC their entire lives and have a veteran parent

**The scholarship list will be updated as new scholarship applications become available.  You may join Mrs. Coates email group to receive scholarship updates by sending a request to ChristaCoates@wcps.org, or you may check the school’s website (www.waynecountyschools.org/330) on a regular basis to see if the list has been updated.
