Preschool Disabilities

The Wayne County Public School system serves preschoolers with special needs ages 3, 4, and 5 (not eligible for kindergarten) in Wayne County.  Free screenings and evaluations are available to determine whether a child has special needs in any developmental areas: Speech, language, cognitive, social, and physical.


Services can be provided in the child's regular preschool, childcare setting, or the child's own home.  Specialized center-based preschool options are also available.

   Child Find
   Multidisciplinary evaluations
   Special education
   Related services, which include transportation, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other supportive services as required to assist a child to benefit from special education
   Parental involvement and consent to all aspects of the educational process
   Confidentiality of records
   Interagency collaboration

Delivery of Services
   Home
   Center-based
   Itinerant (direct/consultation in childcare centers, Head Start, etc.)

Eligibility
   Child reaches third birthday
   Parent requests services from the public schools
   Child meets State Board of Education eligibility criteria for receiving special education and related services
