Second Language/ESL Performance Competition

Every other year, WCPS holds a K-12 Second Language and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) Performance Competition. Hundreds of students, grades kindergarten through 12 compete, displaying their mastery of Spanish, French, or English languages/cultures.

WCPS has held the competition for more than a decade and is the only North Carolina school district that regularly holds such a competition. Administrators say the competition promotes and enhances the district’s second-language program.

“Many of the students spend months preparing for this event. It is always impressive to hear the language proficiency of our participating students. We are appreciative of all of the administrators, teachers, and volunteers who make this event a success each year it is held,” states Hope Meyerhoeffer, Director of Second-Language and the English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) Program.

At the most recent competition, held in April 2015, twenty-seven schools participated. Students were judged on five categories: poetry recitation, modeling of native costumes, musical presentation, dramatic skit, and native dance.
