Child Find

The purpose of Child Find is to enhance public understanding of exceptional children and youth with special needs, to identify and locate the children and youth, and to inform the public of available services.

Eligibility for Special Education:

The Public Schools of North Carolina, Exceptional Children Division provides local educational agencies with detailed procedures for the delivery of special education services. These rules and regulations are detailed in Policies Governing Services For Children With Disabilities.

The Process:



Non-Public Schools:


Wayne County Public Schools is responsible for locating, identifying and evaluating students with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private schools and home schools. 

When a child from a Non-Public School is referred for special education service, a parent will need to fill out the Supplemental Screening Information Parentally Placed Private School Forms. This provides important information for the referral to special education.

When a child from a Non-Public School is referred for special education service, the base school within in the parent's school zone address will conduct all meetings. The school locator and boundaries toocan help parents identify the WCPS base school associated with their address.
