The Wayne County Public School system serves preschoolers with special needs ages 3, 4, and 5 (not eligible for kindergarten) in Wayne County.  Free screenings and evaluations are available to determine whether a child has special needs in any developmental areas: Speech, language, cognitive, social, and physical.

 

Services can be provided in the child's regular preschool, childcare setting, or the child's own home.  Specialized center-based preschool options are also available.

Ages 3, 4, and 5

Services:

  • Child Find
  • Multidisciplinary evaluations
  • Special education
  • Related services, which include transportation, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other supportive services as required to assist a child to benefit from special education
  • Parental involvement and consent to all aspects of the educational process
  • Confidentiality of records
  • Interagency collaboration

 

Delivery of Services

  • Home
  • Center-based
  • Itinerant (direct/consultation in childcare centers, Head Start, etc.)

 

Eligibility

  • Child reaches third birthday
  • Parent requests services from the public schools
  • Child meets State Board of Education eligibility criteria for receiving special education and related services
