Letter about House/CCI from Principal Johnson

THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

As you may know, an integral part of our school mission is to create a very non-traditional feel to the high school experience.  Building relationships and a sense of community is vital to our purpose at Wayne Early/Middle College.  We believe that our students should seek to know and understand one another as well as seek to promote and foster the supportive family feel at our school.

Because we know that communication is a vital element for creating and maintaining  a successful relationship, WEMCHS requires all students as they are sequencing through grades 9-12 to participate in two essential program components:  House and CCI (College Check-In).

House is most closely associated with the advisor/advisee system, whereby students have a staff member that they report to once or several times per week.  The purpose of House is for students to build relationships with one another as well as with their House teacher.  Common activities involve team-building games, real-world discussions, academic help or the sharing of school happenings.  In 9th and 10th grade, students report to House daily.  In 11th and 12th grade, House will be held on Fridays from 12-12:30PMOnly students with special mitigating circumstances and with approval by Mrs. Johnson may be excused from House.

CCI (College Check-in) is a component of the early college concept to provide guidance, assistance and support for high school students taking college classes.  The CCI facilitator will know what college classes their students are taking and will help them stay focused and on task.  During CCI time, students and their facilitator will discuss their college classes, talk about the challenges, specific requirements, and assignments.  They may also receive help from the CCI facilitator and/or from fellow students and find time to study or catch up on assignments.  Finally, the CCI facilitator will monitor college grades and will maintain communication with the student’s parents, school counselor and Principal.

CCI is a prescribed course; students will be assigned CCI time per their individual needs. Some may be required to attend up to three times per week.  Others may be assigned CCI only once per week or once every two weeks.  Class time is 50 minutes.  The frequency of CCI depends upon the success each student is having in their college coursework.  Please note that students who do not attend CCI as scheduled will be pulled from their college courses and may not be allowed to sign for further college coursework.

We want to do all that we can to ensure that our students learn about one another, from one another, and are the best prepared when they leave high school behind to pursue any and all goals they have set for themselves.

Our students at WEMCHS have been given a tremendous opportunity to pursue a college degree while completing their high school diploma and at no cost to them whatsoever.  We, the staff and faculty of WEMCHS, request that both parents and students respect and show their support for these two program elements which are integral to the make-up of the NC New Schools Project early college design.  Thank you very much for your continued support!
