Eastern Wayne Elementary wins “Elementary Battle of the Books” Competition
This is the image for the news article titled Eastern Wayne Elementary wins “Elementary Battle of the Books” CompetitionFor the second year in a row, Eastern Wayne Elementary students successfully put their reading skills to the test by winning the Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) annual Elementary Battle of the Books competition. The competition took place on Friday, March 23, at the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Cultural Center with approximately 115 students from 13 schools competing.

“This was an exciting competition, with the top two teams competing neck and neck to the very end,” states Tamara Berman-Ishee, WCPS Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction. “All of the teams did a great job. We would especially like to congratulate the Eastern Wayne Elementary team for successfully defending their title,and wish them the very best as they move on to the next level of competition.”

The Elementary School Battle of the Books is a quiz bowl style competition that encourages reading. Contestants, who are in grades 4-5, must read 18 books chosen by a statewide committee, and the competition tests students’ comprehension of the books.

The Eastern Wayne Elementary team will travel to New Bern in April to represent WCPS at the Regional 2 competition. The team will compete against other elementary school teams that won their district competitions.

The Eastern Wayne Elementary 2017-2018 Battle of the Books Team consists of Roberto M.G., Carolyn P., Adrian B., Steven Z., Daniel C., and Izeiah O. The team is coached by Christie Davis and Sarah Robinson.

The Battle of the Books program is coordinated by the Media Center program at participating schools. Organizers state that the Battle of the Books competition is a great way to motivate students to read and be exposed to quality literature.

Fremont STARS Elementary took second place at the competition. The Fremont STARS Elementary 2017-2018 Battle of the Books team consists of Kaleigh H., Westlee R., Dalton S., Wonbin K., and Kelcey B. The team was coached by Tammy Derksen.

In addition to Eastern Wayne Elementary and Fremont STARS Elementary, other schools that participated in the competition include: Brogden Primary, Carver Elementary, Grantham Middle, Meadow Lane Elementary, Mount Olive Middle, Northeast Elementary, Northwest Elementary, Rosewood Elementary, Spring Creek Elementary, Spring Creek Middle, and Tommy’s Road Elementary.
