Internet Usage and Filtering

"The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is a federal law enacted by Congress to address concerns about access to offensive content over the Internet on school and library computers. CIPA imposes certain types of requirements on any school or library that receives funding for Internet access or internal connections from the E-rate program – a program that makes certain communications technology more affordable for eligible schools and libraries. In early 2001, the FCC issued rules implementing CIPA. More recently, Congress enacted additional protections for children using the Internet." (http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/cipa.html)

Wayne County Public Schools has purchased hardware and software to use for filtering the internet to ensure compliance with CIPA standards.  The software component is continually updating and sometimes may inadvertently block a site.  Sites are blocked intentionally if they do not have an educational value.  Please remember that the district has an Internet and the Educational Program Policy #3225 that states the internet is to be used for "educational purposes" only.

If you have a site that you would like to be blocked/unblocked, please click on the link below:

It is necessary to follow the procedure and to fill out the form in its entirety.  It will take approximately 1 week to receive and process your request.  Sites that do not meet district standards or procedure will not be unblocked and rationale will be placed on this page as an FAQ (if we receive multiple requests) or sent to you directly.

If you have a website that you would like blocked, please use the link below.  If this is an emergency, please contact either Angie Grantham(735-5060) or JodieKay Wyrosdick (736-5060).

Thank you for your time and patience in this matter.

Why are all the blogging sites blocked?

FAQ

In order to provide faculty with a blogging tool the district has approved and opened two blogging sites:
Teachers should only use the tool designated for their level and remember that the teacher is responsible for monitoring their students for appropriate (educational) use.

Why is youtube blocked?

Youtube has adult content on its site that is not appropriate for students.  The web-filtering system cannot unblock one specific video from a website. The filter cannot block only the adult content safely as it is up to the person that posts the videos to mark them as explicit and not everyone does. If you would like to search for educational videos, please try www.teachertube.com .
