Rising Kindergarten students will soon have the opportunity to build academic strength through the district’s first annual “Kindergarten Boot Camp.” The camp, sponsored by Wayne County Public Schools and Goldsboro Housing Authority, will be held at School Street Early Learning Center. The event is open to all 2018-2019 Kindergarteners who will be enrolled in a WCPS school this fall.
“We are so excited to be able to provide this opportunity to our rising Kindergarteners,” states Karen Wellington Whichard, WCPS Pre-K Coordinator. “This program is designed to help children build reading and math skills, two academic areas that district data has shown to be the most difficult for students entering Kindergarten to master.”
The Kindergarten Boot Camp will be held July 9 through August 2. Two groups of students will meet Monday through Thursday, each week that the camp runs. A morning group will meet from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM. An afternoon group will meet from noon until 3:00 PM. No sessions will be held on Friday.
“We are appreciative of the Goldsboro Housing Authority for collaborating with us on this endeavor,” adds Mrs. Wellington Whichard. “We believe providing early assistance in these foundational areas are crucial. It is out hope that participating children will excel academically once school begins.”
In addition to the sessions for students, the boot camp is also designed to help make the transition to Kindergarten easier for the entire family. While students are taking part in fun and challenging learning activities, parents will have the opportunity to attend special training workshops filled with strategies to help their child be successful in school.
School Street Early Learning Center is located at 415 S. Virginia St. The main entrance is assessable from Elm St. For more information families are encouraged to call 919- 731-5960
