WCPS utilizes new digital tools to promote family & community engagement

For the 2018-2019 school year, schools will be touting new digital and mobile tools to promote family and community engagement.

Online Volunteer Application System
Wayne County Public Schools recognizes the valuable contributions volunteers make to the learning process and to the educational goals of the school district. To support volunteerism in schools, beginning in August 2018, WCPS launched a district-wide School Volunteer Program. Family and community members interested in volunteering at a school will now be able to go to the district website, www.wayecountyschools.org and click on the “Community Resources” tab to access the online application system.

“Through this new online application program, those volunteers who are interested in lending their time and talents to a school are only a few keystrokes away from beginning the process,” states Dr. Yvette Mason, WCPS Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources & Professional Development. “Whether it is helping out in the classroom, around the office, on the athletic field, or as a field trip chaperone, this online process will be the first steps in becoming a school volunteer.”

To help protect the safety of students, this school year the district began requiring background checks for anyone interested in volunteering at a school. The background checks will be completed as part of the online application process.

PeachJar Electronic Flyer Distribution
This past summer, WCPS began distributing flyers and other non-school materials electronically through the PeachJar system. Families will be able to receive flyers via email and access the Peachjar system through the district website, www.waynecountyschools.org, by clicking on the “Parent Resources” tab.

As a part of the program, non-profit organizations will be able to request to have flyers distributed electronically to promote activities, events, and programs. While approved flyers promoting events or activities with a cost will have a $25 charge, any approved flyers promoting free activities or events can be distributed for free. Non-profit organizations are encouraged to go to the district website, www.waynecountyschools.org, and click on the “Community Resources” tab to learn more.

Mobile App
Beginning second semester, WCPS will launch its new mobile app. Parents and stakeholders will can download the app to recieve immediate updates from the district about school closures & delays, news events, and much more!

Safe2SpeakUp App
Beginning second semester, WCPS will launch a new anti-bulling and tips reporting app. The Safe2SpeakUp app will allow students and families to anonymously report bullying and/or other school safety concerns. Once live, families will be access the reporting tools in the district's mobile app or by going to the district website, www.waynecountyschools.org, and clicking on the “Student Resources” or “Parent Resources” tabs.

Website & Other Engagement Tools
This past summer, the district launched its new website. The district and school sites have been redesigned to help parents and stakeholders stay better informed and quickly access pertinent information. Families should note that the district switched to a new call system. The district's new Instant Connect system allows WCPS to quickly send messages from school to home via phone, email and text.  Information about the instant messaging system and mobile app are available on the district website, www.waynecountyschools.org, by clicking on the “Parent Resources” tab.

“We are excited to be able to offer all of these new engagement tools to better support our families and schools in the coming year,” states Dr. Michael Dunsmore, WCPS Superintendent. “As a part of the district’s ongoing strategic plan efforts,  my administrative cabinet has strived to be able to offer families, staff and the general public more digital options in order to engage and create a more connected school community overall.”
