WCPS to Hold Kindergarten Pre-Registration
Wayne County Public Schools will hold its Kindergarten Pre-Registration Day, Thursday, April 18, at all 14 elementary schools. Pre-registration will last from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“Our schools look forward to being able to welcome families and assist them with the first steps in enrolling their child,” states Dr. Carol Artis, Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction and Federal Programs. “Enrolling a child in Kindergarten is always an exciting time for a family. We highly encourage parents or guardians to bring their child with them to Kindergarten Pre-Registration Day to meet with teachers and school staff.  Families can also pick up and complete any required paperwork.”

A child must be five years old on or before August 31 to register for kindergarten for the coming year. Parents/Legal guardians must present an official birth certificate and immunization records to school officials. Birth certificates may be obtained from the Register of Deeds office in the county of the child’s birth.

Parents/guardians must also show “proof of residence.” To enroll a child, parents must present two sources of documentation such as utility bills, tax bills, deed of trust, rent receipt, or any document which clearly proves current resident status. Military families living on base may present a letter from base housing as proof of residence. Parents must enroll their kindergarten child in the school district in which they live.

North Carolina law requires that each kindergarten child receive a health assessment and his/her shots. The health assessment must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form, which is available through the school district, the Wayne County Health Department, and most pediatricians’ offices. If needed, parents/legal guardians will be given a health assessment form during registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes on Monday, August 27.

Parents/guardians can go to the district website at www.waynecountyschools.org to see a complete list of enrollment requirements, as well as find the school their child will attend.

Anyone unable to register their child on the designated day is encouraged to contact the school in their attendance area. Parents/guardians unsure of the school their child will attend should call the district administrative offices at 919-731-5900, stop by the administrative offices at 2001 East Royall Avenue, or go to the district website at www.waynecountyschools.org.

Students currently enrolled in Kindergarten will not attend school on Thursday, April 18, which will count as a vacation day for these students.
