In August 2017, Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) began airing a new locally produced weekly cable television program, called “Coaches Corner.” Now in its third season, the show is as popular as ever.
The “Coaches Corner” program is a weekly interview show, which is kicking off in conjunction with this year’s football season. The show is hosted by Steve Smith, the district’s Video & Digital Marketing Specialist. Each week, the district’s six football coaches will have an opportunity to discuss the prior week’s game as well as the game that week.
“Back in my radio days, I was known as Steve Harper, the voice of the ‘Wayne County High School Football Game of the Week’ program which aired on the former WEQR 96.9,” states Mr. Smith. “As a part of this program, I conducted interviews with the county’s head coaches prior to each week’s games, which aired on WEQR and WGBR. In my new role, I am pleased to bring this same type of format to Channel 18, which was always very popular with both the student-athletes and those tuning in.”
Beginning August of 2017, “Coaches Corner” will be aired every Thursday evening at 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM on the Wayne County Education Alliance Channel (WCEA Channel), which is located on Spectrum Cable Channel 18 and operated by the school district. Shows will be rerun on Friday morning at 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM, and again at 12:30 PM. Shows will also be posted on the district website, www.waynecountyschools.org beginning Thursday afternoon for those who do not have cable access.
“Wayne County Public Schools is excited to launch this weekly sports cable program,” states Ken Derksen, Communications & Public Relations Officer. “‘Coaches Corner’ will be a great way to educate the public about each school’s athletic programs, while also serving as a promotional tool to get more fans involved and out to the games."
