The purpose of this letter is to familiarize you with the new policies of the Physical Education (PE) Department of Eastern Wayne Middle School. PE is a vital part of our student’s total curriculum, and as such, daily participation is a must in order for your child to realize the positive benefits of physical education. Listed below are the rules, regulations, and grading practices for PE.
Students now are only required to wear tennis shoes for dress out. Tennis shoes left at home or lost does not excuse a child from class. It is no longer necessary for students to bring gym shorts, tee shirts or sweats unless they prefer to. Gym bags are no longer allowed on campus.
The general rule for dressing out (wearing tennis shoes) is; if your child is well enough to be in school, then he/she is required to dress out! If a student has a physical disability that prevents him/her from dressing out, exercising, or participating in PE, a doctor’s note is required with explanation the injury, length of time excused, and any limitations if he/she is given limited participation. Students may also be excused from strenuous activities with a parent’s note explaining the minor illness or injury. However, your child is still expected to dress out. If your child has a documented medical condition or disability (i.e. asthma, diabetes, heart or orthopedic problems) that may limit their participation in PE, please fill out the form on the back of this letter.
Your child’s overall PE/Health grade will be determined by a combination of:
Dressing Out (30%)
Classroom Behavior (10%)
Health Skills and Knowledge Test (30%)
Students automatically begin each nine weeks with a 100%. Students who choose not to dress out or participate in PE will have 5 points deducted from their grade for that day. Upon receiving (3) such drops in their grade, a parent contact will be made.
It is our desire that Physical Education and Health be a positive experience for each student. That outcome ultimately hinges on the student.
