The following links provide information that parents, teachers, or other professionals may find useful regarding children with special needs. The resources have been divided into the categories of eligibility provided by North Carolina's Department of Public Instruction. However, the provided resources are not an exhaustive collection of all disabling conditions served by the Exceptional Childrens Program.

Autism Spectrum Disorders

For general information on Autism, here is an Autism Fact Sheet containing helpful information compiled by one of our psychologists, Meghan Brandon.

Wrights Law:

Provides information on Autism as it is related to IDEA (Federal regulations regarding individuals with disabilities), case law, books, resources, organizations and other tools such as how to explain Autism to children.

NASP Autism Spectrum Disorder handout for Parents:

This handout by the National Association of School Psychologists contains information and tips for parents including Characteristics, Diagnosis, Education and Effective Interventions such as medication and behavior management.

Emotional Disability

This page is hosted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. It includes information such as characteristics of emotional disabilities and ways to help those who demonstrated them.


Intellectual Disability

Provides information such as definitions, causes, case study and tips for parents and teachers regarding children with intellectual disabilities. Webpage hosted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Other Health Impairment (OHI)

NICHY :

Includes information on the definition of and specific health impairments that fall under OHI category, as well as life at school and other resources for students eligible for this category.

Attention Deficient/Hyperactivity Disorder can be a health impairment eligible for services in some cases.

Provides tips on interventions and treatment for ADHD

Attention Deficient Disorder Association:

Provides resources and support, webinars, support groups and information on advocacy.

Wright?s Law:

Provides information about ADHD, articles, legeal resources, books, free publications, information and support groups.
