Mathematics Overview

The Mathematics Program, K - 12

The K–12 mathematics program is designed in grade spans that parallel the developmental stages of students: elementary, grades K-5; middle grades, grades 6-8; and high school, grades 9-12.  During the elementary grades, students will focus on building a strong understanding of number (number and operations) and will develop fluency with mathematics to solve problems.  During the middle grades, students will focus on understanding and using rational numbers and will develop their algebraic thinking; additionally, they will develop fluency in solving multi-step equations and modeling linear functions.  During high school, students will take specialized math courses that are designed to give them the skills and knowledge required for their future; all students will need to take courses that involve algebraic/geometric thinking and applied mathematics.

Common Core State Standards:  K -12 Standards for Mathematical Practice

?Note: These 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice play a critical role in student understanding of the content standards set forth in the NC Standard Course of Study for Mathematics, grades K – 12.
  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

For K – 2, the Major Work of the Grade is composed of Major Clusters and Supporting/Additional Clusters as denoted in chart.

For grades 3 – 8, the % ranges are weight distributions determined by NC DPI – Division of Accountability Services, 3-10-15.
