Rules and Expectations





  1. Students must pass 5 of 7 subjects (3 of 4 core subjects) in order to participate in athletics.  During the fall, grades from the previous semester will be used to determine eligibility.  During the spring grades from the previous semester will be used to determine eligibility.
  2. A student will become ineligible for a sport at the end of a semester if they have missed 13 or more days of school during that semester.  If they miss 13 or more days in the spring semester they will be ineligible for sports in the fall of the next school year.
  3. If an athlete is “academically eligible” or “academically ineligible” at the beginning of any semester, that status is retained throughout the full semester.  It is the responsibility of the school principal / Athletic Director to check the academic status of each student / athlete enrolled in school at the beginning and close of a semester.
  4.  NOTE: An athlete becomes eligible or ineligible on the first day of the new semester.
  5. The principal must have evidence of the legal birth date of the student.  A student shall not participate on a seventh or eighth grade team if the student becomes 15 years of age on or before August 31 of that school year.
  6. A student must have a current physical on record with the athletic director in order to be eligible to try out and play any sport throughout the year.  A sport’s physical is good for one (1) year from the date the physical is given.
  7. In order to be eligible for practice or for a game the student must be at school for at least half of that day. All exceptions must be approved by the Principal.
  8. Students placed in ISS or OSS are not allowed to play on that day or days, nor are they allowed to be on campus for the event, even as spectators.  If a student serves ISS in the morning, and gets out at noon, the student is still ineligible for participation.
  9. Students are expected to abide by school rules. Athletes should be an example to the rest of the student body. Athletes should not do anything that is detrimental to themselves or to their team. Coaches are responsible for determining if any behavior reported to them concerning athletes on their team warrants disciplinary action.  If an athlete receives ISS or OSS then it is out of our hands and the steps outlined in the Discipline and Consequences section will be followed.
  10. Discipline and Consequences:  The following is the discipline procedure that will be used by the Brogden Coaching Staff.
    1. Level One: Coach’s Discipline.  The coach will use his or her judgment to determine the discipline necessary.   
    2. Level Two: Coach’s Discipline plus a one game suspension
    3. Level Three:  Dismissal from team

Please note the following:

  1. ISS is an automatic Level Two Offense
  2. OSS is an automatic Level Two Offense - (in most cases, if they receive OSS, they have already been through the process of being warned on several occasions for behavior.)If they receive OSS for more than 3 days they will be automatically dismissed from the team.  Any offense deserving of more than 3 days of OSS is the result of something very severe (see C below) or is the result of constant warnings and previous office / ISS referrals.
  3. In the case of any malicious act the coach and /or administrators can bypass all Levels of Discipline and dismiss the athlete from the team. In other words, there are some acts that do not deserve three levels of discipline. They would call for immediate dismissal. Examples would be starting a fight, hazing a teammate or classmate, bullying, being caught with drugs or weapons, and/or stealing from teammates or faculty. Being disrespectful to any staff member can be grounds for skipping levels of discipline as well.
  4. Bullying and Hazing:  Hazing or peer type actions of a physical nature that one student or student athlete does to another will not be tolerated. 
  1. Hazing is defined as - the practice of playing unpleasant tricks on someone or forcing someone to do unpleasant things
  2. Bullying is defined as - unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.


  1. The winter sports season will be the only time that a student will be allowed to play two sports at one time.  This would allow a boy and/or girl to play basketball and cheer.
  2. If a student quits or is dismissed from a team during one season they may not play another sport during that season.  For example, if a student quits the football team they will not be able to play soccer.  Depending on the circumstances, if a student does quit a team it could jeopardize their chances at making another team later in the year.
