If you have a passion for helping children grow academically, then we would like to help you take your place at the head of the class. Wayne County Public Schools is looking for motivated individuals that can maintain classroom instruction while the teacher is away. We are now accepting substitutes with a high school diploma. New WCPS Substitute Teachers are required to attend Effective Teacher Training, unless you hold an active North Carolina teaching license (please see note at the bottom).
If interested in becoming a substitute teacher, please follow the steps below.
Step 1.
Please complete an application online, powered by Frontline - Recruiting & Hiring. Please see our WCPS Job Board!
Step 2.
Please go to Wayne Community College - Continuing Education Department (Walnut Building, East Entrance) to register and pay for the course. The course is $70.00. Please register no later than 24 hours prior to course.
Step 3.
You will receive a link via email from Frontline - Central. This is an electronic packet of forms consisting of pre-employment documents that are required to be completed.

Once all pre-employment documents are completed, you will receive another electronic packet of forms consisting of payroll documents and onboarding information.

Step 4.
Once all documents have been completed, Yeny Piedra (Human Resources Department) will provide you with a New Hire Confirmation, that will include your start date as a Substitute Teacher.
What is Effective Teacher Training?
There is a 24-hour course, co sponsored by Wayne County Public Schools and Wayne Community College, which is required for all substitute teacher applicants. The course will provide practical training in five critical skill areas that include planning, instruction, behavior management, human relations, and professional growth. Applicants will also be introduced to WCPS policies and procedures.
Note: If you have a current teaching license or three or more consecutive years at a public or private school as a teacher assistant, you will NOT have to take Effective Teacher Training.
