The intent of the Healthful Living curriculum is to establish goals and objectives for behaviors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. The curriculum’s focus is multi-dimensional, encompassing the well-being of the whole child. The total Healthful Living curriculum is a combination of two content areas: health education and physical education. The two courses complement each other. The curriculum provides students with a sequential education program that will involve learning a variety of skills that enhance quality of life.
The Health Education component is comprised of five strands, which address mental, emotional, and physical health. All strands are taught in an age-appropriate manner throughout all grade levels. The strands are as follows:
- Mental and Emotional Health
- Personal and Consumer Health
- Interpersonal Communication and Relationships
- Nutrition and Physical Activity
- Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
The Physical Education component of the curriculum is comprised of four strands, which address physical and social fitness, and four standards. The strands and standards are as follows:
- Motor Skills
Standard: Apply competent motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
- Movement Concepts
Standard: Understand concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics that apply to the learning and performance of movement.
- Health-Related Fitness
Standard: Understand the importance of achieving and maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
- Personal/Social Responsibility
Standard: Use behavioral strategies that are responsible and enhance respect of self and others and value activity.
Kids Health Parents
Children, teens, and professionals find answers to commonly asked health questions. Topics include the benefits of different types of vitamins, the food pyramid, healthy children's recipes, how to read food labels, and keeping fit.Kids Health
