Welcome Back!

August 16, 2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Carver Heights Elementary, home of the Mighty Eagles!  Our entire team has been working hard to build an environment that is safe, warm, and academically rich for your child. This year,  we are focused on “Building a Culture of Excellence” which will allow all students to thrive and reach their fullest potential. We are fine tuning some things, as well as putting in place new initiatives, ideas, and educational models for our students. A few of the new things you will notice this year are:
  • Our brand new reading curriculum American Reading Company (ARC). We commonly refer to the reading curriculum as ARC. This program will help our students and teachers increase rigor in their classroom instruction. We invite you to talk to your child in the coming weeks about this new reading approach.
  • Carver Heights Elementary used our School Improvement money to purchase each student an Agenda. These agendas will assist with two-way communication between teachers and parents. Each page has a section for parent-teacher communication and for students to record their homework. Agendas are $5 if lost or misplaced.
  • Along with academics, we are working hard to build a culture that will allow our students’ voices to be heard through restorative practice. Restorative Practice allows the use of circles and formal conferencing to allow the voices of all students to be heard. In the event of challenging behavior, your child may be asked the following questions to help us gain a better understanding of their thoughts and actions:
    • What happened?
    • What were you thinking at the time?
    • What have you thought about since?
    • Who has been affected by what you have done?
    • What do you think you need to do to make things right?

    If harm was done:

    • What did you think when you realized what had happened?
    • What impact has this incident had on you and others?
    • What has been the hardest thing for you?
    • What do you think needs to happen to make things right?

We have been working really hard to begin the steps of “Building a Culture of Excellence”.  Communication is one of our primary goals for the 2019-2020 school year. Therefore, below are a couple of reminders that are extremely important to the day-to-day operation of our school.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

  • School starts at 8:30. The tardy bell rings at 9:00 a.m. Students reporting after this time will need to be signed in by a parent and will be counted tardy.
  • Students and parents may enter the building at 8:25. There are no staff members on duty prior to 8:25. Therefore, DO NOT drop students off prior to this time as there is no one on duty to monitor students.
  • Car riders may be dropped off at the back entrance beginning at 8:25 a.m. Staff members will be on duty to assist.
  • Dismissal begins at 4:30. Students signing out prior to this time must be signed out by a parent or an adult on the “Authorization Form” with a picture I.D. No students will be called up from the office after 4:15 as we will be preparing for dismissal

Phone Calls Pertaining to Car riders and Bus riders

  • A “Change in Transportation” form must be received and approved in order for a student to change their method of transportation. You may pick up this form from the front office. Phone calls for changes to buses or car pick-up will not be accepted. Students may only ride a bus, in which they have been assigned

Follow Us on Facebook

Stay updated with all things Carver Heights by following our school’s Facebook page. Make sure you and your child visit our page daily for an opportunity to receive a special treat on Open House Night.  All students can receive a “Facebook ticket”  on our Open House Night. Our Facebook page,  will be updated and introduce some of our staff members, who work behind the scenes to help our school run smoothly. Students who receive a “Facebook ticket” must visit each of the staff members introduced on Facebook to  receive a special treat.

Thank you so much for allowing us to serve you and your child. We take our roles as educators seriously and we value the faith you have in us. We know we will be wonderful partners as we “Build a Culture of Excellence” for our students to shine and reach their full potential.

Sincerely,

Dr. Patrice Faison, Principal
