Board of Education Meeting Recap - July 20, 2020
The following is a brief recap of the July 20, 2020 Special Called Meeting:
Following opening comments by Board Chair Don Christopher West and interim superintendent Dr. James Merrill, an update was provided on the district's School Reopening Plans. Tamara Berman Ishee, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning, shared information about the planning process and the district's draft Plan B, which is a hybrid of face-to-face and remote instruction concept. She and other leadership team members answered questions from the Board about specific details within the district's draft plans. After much discussion, some Board Members expressed a desire to make a decision now as to which plan to go with in order to give parents more time to plan. The Board voted 5-2 to reopen schools in August under the Plan B concept, and directed district leadership to move forward with finalizing details within the plan. The Board also noted that factors may arise which could cause the district to temporarily start schools under Plan C, which is 100% remote instruction for all students. The Board then took a short recess.
Upon return to open session, the district administration recommended that the Board delay the return of students on the Non-Traditional Academic Calendar by a week to assist with reopening planning. The Board approved the recommendations to the 2020-2021 Non-Traditional Academic Calendar.
After the Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding between WAGES and Wayne County Public Schools, the Board focused its discussion on planning for its Superintendent Search and potential search firms that could assist. The Board's attorney, Richard Schwartz, shared that six search firms submitted proposals. After Chair West polled the Board on their top picks, the Board decided to meet next Wednesday (July 29), at 11 AM to hear presentations from the School Boards Association and Ray & Associates. The attorney was asked to contact the two search firms. Once confirmed, the public meeting will be officially noticed.
The meeting ended after Board members were given the opportunity to make individual comments.
