The following is abrief recap of the July 29, 2020 Special Called Meeting:
Presentations were given by Ray & Associates, Inc. and the North Carolina School Boards Association regarding how their organizations could support the Board in a superintendent search process.
Following the presentations, Board members discussed the need to include public input in the selection process. There was consensus amongst the Board regarding the need to give the public opportunities to provide input about the characteristics or qualities they would like to see in a new superintendent. However, there was much debate about whether public disclosure of the finalists should be allowed as part of the selection and public input process.
Following the discussion, Chair West polled Board members about their interest in moving forward with the selection of a superintendent search firm. The Board was in favor of taking action and amended its agenda so that a vote could be taken. The Board voted 5-1 to move forward with the North Carolina School Boards Association, with some Board members noting the association's superintendent search experience and cost (estimated to be around $25,000) as reasons for their decision.
The meeting was ended once there were no further comments.
