Bus Driver Qualifications

Bus drivers in Wayne County must possess a NC Commercial Drivers License with a" P" and “S” endorsement. To obtain this you must complete the school bus driver training consisting of three days of classroom instruction and three days of behind-the-wheel training and pass a written examination administered by the DMV School Bus & Traffic Safety Section of NC.

Hiring process for Bus Drivers

Complete and return the bus driver application to Transportation Department. Once application is complete and all qualifications are met (Physical, Background check, Tuberculosis and Pre-Employment Drug Test), then you must attend Bus Driver class. After completion of Bus Driver class, all applicants must obtain a Commercial Driving License (CDL P & S Endorsements). Beginning January 1, 2018, all new and renewing school bus drivers will be required to have a DOT medical card.

Concerned about costs? No problem! WCPS covers the cost of the background check and will reimburse expenses related to the acquisition of the DOT Medical Card (including the physical, Tuberculosis and Pre-Employment Drug Test) once an applicant is employed as a school bus driver.
