This week, the first day of classes began for two Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) Non-Traditional Calendar schools. The remaining 31 schools will welcome students on Monday, August 25. In preparation for their return, WCPS is sharing key information to help students and families start the school year confident and ready to learn.

First Day of School
Schools on the Traditional Calendar will welcome students on Monday, August 25.

Open House
Next week, each school will host Open House activities. Open House events are a great opportunity for families to:

  • Meet teachers and staff

  • Learn about classroom expectations

  • Get familiar with school campuses

  • Pick up supply lists and daily schedules

Schedules vary by school. Families can find specific dates and times by visiting

www.waynecountyschools.org, and clicking on Open House Schedule to locate their school’s information.

New Communications Tool: Talking Points
WCPS is introducing Talking Points as the primary two-way communications tool between families and schools. This platform, provided by the WCPS Federal Programs and Curriculum & Instruction departments, translates messages in more than 150 languages. It will replace previous 2-way messaging systems and is designed to provide clear, consistent communication, ensuring every family feels informed and included.

Volunteers Make a Difference
School volunteers play a critical role in supporting our schools and touch countless student lives through their service. By giving their time and talents, volunteers help provide the highest-quality experience for students, staff, and families. To get involved, visit www.waynecountyschools.org and click on ”Become a Volunteer” to apply.

Safety on the Roads
With thousands of students traveling by bus, car, bike, and on foot, WCPS is asking all drivers hitting the roadways to help keep our students safe:

  • Never pass a school bus with flashing amber lights

  • Allow extra travel time during morning and afternoon commutes

  • Watch for children at bus stops and along the road

  • Slow down for crosswalks and school zones

Message from the Superintendent
“Our staff and administrators are excited to welcome students back for the new school year,” states Dr. Marc Whichard, Superintendent. “We are committed to supporting every student by providing safe, welcoming schools and engaging teaching. The dedication and support of our schools, families, and community have had significant impacts on student outcomes, and we are ready to build on that momentum this year.”

More updates will be shared as the school year begins.
