Charles B. Aycock High School sophomore Kannyn Fail and senior Katelynn McDermott played well in an opening round loss on Friday morning at the NCHSAA 5-A doubles state women’s tennis championships at Ting Park in Holly Springs.
Juniors Rosalyn and Lilyan Chen of Atkins High School, who advanced to the state finals later in the day, downed the Aycock duo 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. We were very competitive. We won the first set, went up 2-0 in the second, and we had two game points to go up 3-0 and one game point to go up 4-3 against a pair of girls who both had good ground strokes.
Fail and McDermott finished the season with an overall record of 19-3 and were regional finalists.
