For their FEMA IS-800 project, Public Safety students at Goldsboro High School designed and built police and fire buildings to better understand how local agencies respond during major incidents.
Using LEGO models 🧩 allows students to plan, visualize, and apply real-world concepts related to public safety, coordination, and disaster response. This creative, hands-on approach brings emergency management lessons to life!

We are proud that Goldsboro’s varsity men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes participated in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association African American History Month program titled “The Education-Based Athletics Legacy of Norvell Lee” at the Simon F. Terrell Building.
Throughout the day, our student-athletes engaged in a curated memorabilia presentation, heard from former players, family members, and athletics leaders during an interactive panel discussion, and participated in a Socratic seminar reflecting on Coach Lee’s impact during segregation and integration.
This experience was about much more than attendance; it was about legacy, leadership, and giving our student-athletes a chance to understand the shoulders on which they stand, and the enduring influence of education-based athletics in shaping communities and lives. Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek) was noted as saying, "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness, that is life."
Four years ago, Jessica "Venus" Zelaya decided to try out the new sport offered at Goldsboro High School. Wrestling was a demanding task, but she showed up every day. Eventually, she made a goal. She wanted to make it to the state wrestling tournament. She ran cross country. Practiced in the off-season. Changed her eating habits. Found different places to practice. Was early to practices and late to leave. She did it right. She was devoted. All while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
At regionals, she lost a match, then went on a tear... winning four matches and securing her dream of making it to the State Tournament.
As far as placing at States, she fell short. But this young woman has forged a path that others can follow. She is the last of my firsts and GHS. The final wrestler who started this journey with me and the first to stick with me for four years. She will be one of those stories I tell kids for years to come. Goldsboro High School Athletics is proud to recognize and celebrate the tremendous success of our Cougar Basketball programs this season! Across all four levels, our student-athletes and coaching staffs demonstrated excellence, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to representing Cougar Nation with pride.
🏀 JV Girls Basketball
Under the leadership of Coach Zeara McDuffie, our JV Girls finished the season with a strong 5-1-1 overall record, with their only tie coming in a hard-fought overtime battle against Kinston.
Although there were not enough conference teams to qualify for a championship, our JV Girls remained undefeated against conference opponents. Their growth, consistency, and determination have laid a solid foundation for the future of our program.
🏀 JV Boys Basketball
Led by Coach Tavon Murchison and Coach Octavius Alston, our JV Boys finished with an outstanding 16-2 overall record and 10-1 in conference play.
Their exceptional performance earned them the title of 2025-2026 Regular Season Conference Champions! This team displayed teamwork, focus, and a championship mindset all season long.
🏀 Varsity Girls Basketball
Under the direction of Coach Khadijah Bryant, our Varsity Girls completed an incredible season with a 21-2 overall record and a perfect 12-0 conference record.
Their dominance secured the Regular Season Conference Championship. Their resilience, leadership, and execution have set the standard for excellence.
🏀 Varsity Boys Basketball
Led by Coach Jamaal Croom, our Varsity Boys finished the regular season 19-4 overall and 12-0 in conference play.
Their outstanding performance earned them the Regular Season Conference Championship, continuing the proud tradition of Cougar Basketball excellence.
