This week, classes began for two Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) schools on the district’s Non-Traditional Calendar: Wayne School of Engineering and Wayne Early/Middle College High School. The remaining 31 schools will welcome students on Monday, August 24.
As families prepare for the start of the 2026–2027 school year, WCPS is sharing key information and resources to help students and families start the year confident, prepared, and ready to learn.
Back-to-School Updates for Families

First Day of School
Schools on the Traditional Calendar will welcome students on Monday, August 24.
Open House
Each school will host Open House activities. These events provide families an opportunity to:
Meet teachers and school staff
Learn about classroom expectations and routines
Become familiar with the school campus
Pick up supply lists, schedules, and other important information

New: Elementary Before-Care & After-Care
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, WCPS will offer Elementary School Before-Care and After-Care programs for WCPS students enrolled at participating schools.
These fee-based programs are designed to provide families with a safe, convenient option for student care outside of regular school hours. Programs will operate under established guidelines and expectations for participating families.

2-Way Communication Through Talking Points
WCPS uses Talking Points as its primary two-way communication tool between families and schools and occurs via SMS text messaging and a mobile app. The platform translates messages into more than 150 languages and helps provide clear, consistent communication so every family can stay informed and connected. Parents should be on the lookout for messages from their child's teacher(s).
Volunteers Make a Difference
School volunteers play a critical role in supporting our schools and positively impacting countless student lives. By sharing their time and talents, volunteers help provide a high-quality experience for students, staff, and families.

Safety on the Roads
With thousands of students traveling by school bus, personal vehicle, and on foot, WCPS asks all drivers to help keep students safe as the school year begins:
Never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
Allow extra travel time during morning and afternoon commutes.
Watch for children at bus stops and along roadways.
Slow down and remain alert in school zones and at crosswalks.
