Northeast Guardians, After Hurricane Matthew and Florence WCPS received thousands of dollars in donations to support the hundreds of students to provide support to students and staff who had been displaced/impacted from historical flooding and storm damages. This included a sizable donation from students in one Western school district. As our Western NC school districts are now facing their historic devastation and recovery with Helene, WCPS now has the opportunity to collectively give back and show our Western neighbors some needed support. Here are two ways we are going to do that: WCPS "Coins for a Cause" coin/dollar drive All schools are going to be given plastic gallon jugs from Mt. Olive Pickle to participate in a Grade Level fundraiser/Coin Drive. The goal is for each school to promote the fundraiser and to have a fun internal competition within each school between the grades about how many coins/dollars can be raised (Note: Schools are not competing amongst each other). We will kick off this "Coins for a Cause" coin/dollar drive on October 7, which will give you time to begin the promotion. We are also going to work with the NC SECU to utilize coin counters throughout this campaign to quickly tally how much money schools are raising through coins. This coin/dollar drive will go through November 6. WCPS is working with the NC Superintendents Association to identify specific Western districts that we will partner with for these monetary donations. As occurred in 2016 and again in 2018 to support our schools, all proceeds will go to partnered districts in Western NC to purchase gift cards to support those students and families displaced/impacted by flooding and storm damage. Physical Donations The drop-off location for the donated items listed below will be the gym. This physical collection drive will officially begin Monday, October 7 and run through October 25. Once completed, WCPS will pick up items from each school and have them trucked to impacted communities: Toilet Paper Bottled Water Non-Perishable Food Contractor-Size Trash Bags First Aid Supplies Feminine Hygiene Diapers & Baby Clothes Gatorade Canned Goods Personal Hygiene Products Feminine Hygiene Products Baby Wipes Cleaning Supplies Pet Food (dog/cat) Hand Sanitizer Paper Towels Bleach (Bottles, Spray, Wipes) Shovels Brooms Gloves Flashlights Batteries On behalf of Wayne County Public Schools, Superintendent Dr. Marc Whichard, and the Wayne County Board of Education, thank you for your support of these critical drives for impacted NC communities, students, and families!

Good evening Northeast Guardians, here are next week's reminders and upcoming events. Next week’s PBIS focus will be buses. Please discuss with your child the importance of following all bus rules. Your child must sit down while the bus is in motion, with no loud talking and no fighting. Ask your child to tell you the other rules of the bus. It is also important for your child to be outside waiting on the bus. In the afternoon, someone needs to be outside waiting for the child or have the front door open so the driver knows that someone is home. On Tuesday, September 24, we will kick off our first fundraiser of the year. Wednesday, September 25th is an early release day. The students will release at 12:45. Some progress reports did not go home on Friday. They will go home by Friday, September 27th. Don't forget some grade levels have already sent out t-shirt orders. Don't miss the deadline. If you have any questions, reach out to the classroom teacher. There are two field trips already planned for next month. Kindergarten is going to the fair and first grade is going to Dean’s farm. If you want to be a chaperone, you must complete the volunteer application on the WCPS website and then class dojo Ms. Brooks once you have been approved. Thank you and enjoy your evening.

Good evening Northeast Guardians, Here are next week's reminders and events... Wednesday, September 18 is picture day. Please make sure that your child is ready to show their beautiful smile for the camera. Scouting Roundup meeting will be held on Thursday, September 19th at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria. There will also be a School Advisory Council meeting at 6:00 in the media center. Friday, September 20th, progress reports will go home. Make sure to review the report and reach out to the classroom teacher if you have any questions. Don't forget to review the bus calendar daily. If the driver calls out last minute, Ms. Brooks will put the message on Classdojo and the bus calendar. Every afternoon, the office will close at 2:30 and will not reopen until after the car rider line is complete. That is normally about 3:15. Staff will not be available to answer the phone until then. Don't forget to have all transportation request sent to the teacher on Classdojo before noon. Bus rider parents, please make sure to be at the bus stop or standing outside visible for the driver. Ms Brooks rode with a driver on Friday and the driver had to hold up traffic to ensure that students went into the house. The majority of our drivers have to drive for the middle school and if they have to wait for students to go in the house, this will make them late for the middle school students. Thank you and have a great evening.

Good evening Northeast Guardians; Here are next week's reminders and events: tomorrow, September 9th volunteer orientation has been canceled. You are now able to go in and complete all the necessary steps to become a volunteer from home. The process includes the volunteer orientation that we normally do at NEE. Once you have received confirmation that your background check and application have been approved and you would like to volunteer, reach out to Ms. Brooks via class-dojo and she will go in and verify that everything is complete. Once everything has been verified, she will add you to the list of volunteers. You must complete the volunteer application to attend field trips and volunteer in the school. Please know that you must resubmit a new application each school year. All afternoon transportation requests must be sent to the teacher before noon daily. The last reminder we have today is classroom concerns. If you have a classroom concern, please have a conversation with the teacher to see if the concerns can be addressed. If the concerns are not resolved, please contact Ms. Carter. Thank you and have a nice evening.

Good evening Northeast Guardians, Seeing all those smiling faces in the school this past week was a joy. Here are next week's reminders and events: tomorrow, September 2nd is a holiday. The school will be closed for Labor Day. Please make sure to review school SOAR and bus expectations with your child. Transportation is working hard to fill all of your requests for a bus. It can take up to ten days to get a bus. If your child does not have a bus, your child should be a car rider. Students can enter the building at 7:10 and are considered late at 7:30. Students who are late must be walked in by an adult. We will dismiss at 2:35 again this week. Your car rider tag should be hung on your rearview mirror so the staff can see your number. If you do not have a car tag, you must park and wait until the car rider line is complete to be assisted in the office. The office closes during dismissal to assist with dismissal. We will be having our first volunteer orientation, on Monday, September 9th at 3:15 in the cafeteria. To be able to volunteer at the school and attend field trips, you must be a volunteer. Please go to the Wayne County Public Schools website and complete the application to become a volunteer. Thank you and enjoy your evening

We are excited to welcome students and families to the 2024-25 school year. Please make sure that your child is outside and ready for the bus at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. The driver may be off of the given schedule until they become familiar with the route. Talk with your child about making sure that their siblings are on the bus before the bus leaves the campus. Every year we have a bus calendar that parents should view daily to make sure that their child's bus is running. The last reminder for buses is the bus brochure. The bus brochure explains the expectations for the bus and consequences if expectations are broken, please review the expectations with your child. Identification will be required when students are being checked out. The Northeast office hours are 6:45-3:45 with the exception to dismissal. Dismissal will start at 2:35 for the first two weeks of school. Please be patient in the car rider line. Do not get out of your car. The office will close daily during dismissal to assist with dismissal. All walk-up parents will have to wait until all of the cars are out of the car line before they will be assisted by the office staff. The car rider tag should be visible so the staff can see the number. We will not accept someone telling the car rider number or the number written down. If your child was a car rider last year, they will use the same assigned number. The first set of car rider tags are free. If you misplaced your car tag from previous years, there will be a charge of $5 for 3. We would also like for you to speak to your child about what to do when they enter the building each morning. We would like to make sure that all students go straight to their homeroom or straight to breakfast. Students are not allowed to go visit their previous teachers or go down halls that their class is not on. There will be staff throughout the building to assist all new students. Thank you and we are looking forward to having an amazing school year.
